CAN THO – Can Tho City has partnered with the 100 Resilience Cities (100 RC) – Pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation to kick off the city’s resilience strategy, which is the first to be geared toward a fast-growing city in the Mekong Delta.

Speaking at a Can Tho Resilience Strategy Release Workshop on June 19, Dr. Nguyen Hieu Trung, chief resilience officer for Can Tho, said that the Can Tho resilience strategy is aimed at addressing challenges and difficulties related to environmental degradation, flooding, climate change, urbanization and unemployment.

Can Tho vice chairman Dao Anh Dung told the Saigon Times that the Rockefeller Foundation has given US$100 million in aid to 100 cities worldwide, including Can Tho, to conduct the program.

“The completion of the strategy is the result of two years of hard work by the relevant departments and agencies in cooperation with experts from institutes and schools, firms and individuals in Can Tho City,” Dung said. The resilience strategy is expected to turn Can Tho City into a clean, safe, green and prosperous city.

Lauren Sorkin, regional director of Asia Pacific at 100 RC, said that Can Tho as a fast growing city will play a leading role in catalyzing the urban resilience movement in the Mekong Delta.

The strategy highlighted the fact that the city has pulled its weight to ensure resilience and carefully mapped out solutions and activities to address the challenges.

“This long-term strategy will help the city fulfill its target of developing its river ecosystem, which is vulnerable to climate change,” Sorkin said.

Trung said that the strategy covers four fields: healthcare and welfare, infrastructure and environment, economy and society and policies and systems.

For healthcare and welfare, the city will ensure its residents have stable incomes and live in a safe and clean environment. On policies and systems, it will build policies and plans systematically to cope with pressure and obstacles.

100 RC helps the participating cities become more resilient to social, economic and physical challenges that are increasing in the 21st century.
