THO – Thirty disadvantaged students in the Mekong Delta province of Hau
Giang, who have just returned to school after a prolonged school break
to slow the spread of the new coronavirus, were given academic financial
aid this morning, May 7.
These students come from families that are struggling due to the impact
of Covid-19, which is associated with the coronavirus. They were
selected to receive the funds by the Hau Giang’s Women Union in
collaboration with the authorities of Le Qui Don Secondary School, Vi
Thanh High School and Hoang Dieu Secondary School.
Each student received VND500,000 from the VND15 million study aid
package sponsored by Mirae Asset Vietnam, under the Saigon Times-Noi
Vong Tay Lon charity program.
The Hau Giang Women’s Union also presented 3,000 face masks and smart handwashing machines to the three schools.
“I will give this sum of money to my mom,” stated Mai Anh Thu, an
eighth grader at Le Qui Don Secondary School, at a donation ceremony
this morning. Thu’s father works as a construction worker but has been
unemployed for months as a result of Covid-19, while her mother is a
housewife.
A Vi Thanh high school student named Nguyen Minh Quan, whose family is on welfare, told the Saigon Times that he will give the money to his father, who is self-employed.
Nguyen Thi Tuyet Loan, chairwoman of the provincial Women’s Union, told the Saigon Times
that the Union had decided to launch a program to help at least 50,000
students in the province attend school safely amid the public health
crisis. Under this program, State employees and members of the Union
have joined forces to offer financial aid as well as face masks and hand
sanitizers to disadvantaged students, to ensure their studies are not
disrupted even though their parents have lost their jobs or had their
incomes slashed due to Covid-19.
The decision was made after the provincial Women’s Union teamed up with
the Saigon Times Group to donate 100 gift sets to poor people in Phung
Hiep District on April 28, Loan added.
“We sincerely thank the Saigon Times-Noi Vong Tay Lon program for
agreeing without the slightest hesitation to coordinate with the Hau
Giang Women’s Union to offer Covid-19 relief to vulnerable students. We
hope that generous individuals and businesses will continue to offer
financial aid, face masks and hand sanitizers to encourage struggling
students across the country during the pandemic,” remarked the
chairwoman.
Given the difficulties faced by many people during the pandemic, the
Saigon Times Group since early April has called on individuals and
businesses to join the Saigon Times-Noi Vong Tay Lon program to share
the burdens of those affected, especially the self-employed and the
disabled. Through the donation, the Group hoped to offer encouragement
to the locals during this time of hardship, explained Saigon Times
Group's Editor-in-Chief Tran Minh Hung.
As of May 7, the program had donated 3,830 gift sets to impoverished
people in HCMC, Dong Thap, Can Tho, Danang, Quang Nam, Ha Giang and Hau
Giang.
