CAN THO – The prime minister met with farmers in the Mekong Delta
region to discuss how to do away with bottlenecks affecting the
agriculture sector at a seminar held in Can Tho City today, December 10.
The seminar, held by the Vietnam Farmers Association and the Can Tho
government, was aimed at finding ways to address these bottlenecks.
Five issues tabled at the seminar included poor connectivity between
farmers, the State, scientists, banks, firms and distributors;
difficulty in accumulating farmland for large-scale production; farmers’
limited skills; the rampant use of low-quality and fake fertilizer and
plant protection drugs; and poor relations between farming organizations
and members and farmers.
Speaking at the seminar, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc encouraged
farmers to raise their questions and present the difficulties facing
them to find suitable solutions to further develop agriculture.
The prime minister noted that the Ministry of Finance should be in
charge of supporting farmers with loans, whereas the Ministry of
Transport should take measures to lower logistics and transport costs to
help raise the competitiveness of farm produce.
Currently, climate change is worsening in the Mekong Delta's 13
provinces, he said, questioning what solutions would be suitable for
strengthening farmers in the region.
He also urged reforms in technology, the use of seeds that are not
affected by salinity and drought and crop cultivation methods with
improved production and fewer obstacles.
The prime minister pointed out that farmers should be proactive in
restructuring their production processes and applying new technology to
raise their output and productivity, as well as catch up with the global
trend.
Regarding chain production, PM Phuc told the competent agencies in the
provinces and cities to instruct farmers applying the new technology, to
develop organic and clean agriculture.
The prime minister expected the relevant ministries and departments to create more favorable conditions and offer preferential policies to startups active in the agriculture sector after the seminar.
